The S.I.M.B.A.D. project

The project for a Bibliographic Metadata Information System on Digital Architecture (S.I.M.B.A.D.) was aimed at creating a system for lying the foundation for the digital information infrastructure construction, that supports the human conceptual work and points to the information preservation, in the long term, which is connoted by the maximum technological independence and supports the data interoperability for the exchange and the circulation of the digital information objects.

The S.I.M.B.A.D. was born with the intention to build basic components for a digital library realization, that is inserted in the provincial library "P. Albino" (BPA) context and becomes the beginning holding element for the digital information infrastructure.

The BPA, was the ideal environment for the digital library realization, based on three fundamental reasons: the sensible management politics to the preservation and to the access of the digital objects, the computing grade started by several years and the community technical ability (management responsibility mentioned in the Research Library Group report Trusted Digital Repositories: Attributes and Responsibilities ).

Furthermore, the project aims at featuring the digital library with the attibutes suggested in the document and at using tools and technologies having the required features: data formats conformity standards, reference to data and metadata models realized or, under development, by the other national and international organizations and institutions, useful to the long term preservation and to the interoperability of the digital information.

The digital library implementation was started from the strong conviction of having to be built with standard and technology developed by the W3C for the semantic web, because the semantic web is under development, as digital information infrastructure that supports the software integration through the semantic interoperability.

Project realization phases:

  1. The digital objects selection (under translation)
  2. The object model (under translation)
  3. The metadata structure (under translation)
  4. The legacy system and the metadata implementation
  5. The navigation tool
