The navigation tool

S.I.M.B.A.D. project - phase 5.

The S.I.M.B.A.D. navigation tool is an application solution for:

  • displaying the images file and the descriptive administrative and structural metadata content
  • exploring the available BDPA resources
The application was developed in XSLT, coherently to the technological independence. The XSLT solution type is the simplest and the less invasive in the metadata system. It doesn't have the advantages of the other application tools for the information retrieval but, the choice was made because the intention was making the user free to choice and able to look the whole set of resources, deleting the searching software application filter. In this way, the simplicity's prerogative is privileged: displaying the list of the available resources, these are accessed through the normal hypertextual links.

Nevertheless it seems a step back in respect of the facility that can be provided by a search algorithm, the displaying style can provide not only the advantage of the technological independence with preservative purpose, but also a sort of serendipity, as value added for user's education.

The XSLT application consists of three files, the employment depends on the object level hierarchy:

The application's behavior emulate the real object's behavior, infact it is very similar to a book's index but it takes the advatages of the hypertext, allow the user to choose the favourite resource. In the last level of the object's structure (still images), this tool allows user to turn over the pages of object's colletion or to skip from one page to another throughout hypertextual links.

The category's sort help users in the resources' search and the types of sort are distinguished on the collection type.

Project S.I.M.B.A.D. realization phases:

  1. The digital objects selection (under translation)
  2. The object model (under translation)
  3. The metadata structure (under translation)
  4. The legacy system and the metadata implementation
  5. The navigation tool
